The company Tempur Pedic (tempurpedic.com) realized the potential of memory foam for the consumer market. Initially they simply made a more durable tempur foam for the medical market, but when patients reported sleeping better and waking up with less aches and pains, Tempur Pedic (tempur-pedic.com) launched memory foam bedding for the mass market, including tempur-pedic matresses and tempur-pedic pillows. Tempur foam was very expensive and still is due to the fact that the Tempur Pedic Company originally came from the medical field and they fact that they spend an enormous amount on advertising.
Tempur-pedic now sells three tempur-pedic style mattresses; the Classic, the Deluxe and the Celebrity. When you go to their site tempur-pedic.com, it is simple to get around, however one cannot find anywhere the specifications for each tempur-pedic+mattress. For instance how much memory foam is in each mattress and what is the density of the tempur foam? We couldn't find that information anywhere. It turns out the density they use in the tempur-pedic matresses is 5.3lbs. A high quality foam with a price tag to match. Other foam manufacturers began to produce their own versions of memory foam. Since these manufacturers came from the consumer market rather than the medical market, their cost was much lower and they pass these lower costs on to the consumer in the form of lower prices.
