Creating the Right Environment for A Good Nights Sleep
|
If you're like some people, there's more to an ideal sleeping area than your bed. But of course your bed is important and the key ingredient to the comfort of your bed is the mattress. These days matresses come in all shapes and sizes from the conventional inner spring mattress to the new memoryfoam mattress. The new trend in matresses is memoryfoam. A sensitive foam material that senses your body weight and temperature and gently conforms to cradle you in perfect comfort. A memoryfoam mattress is like sleeping on a cloud.
But for your total sleeping environment your bed is only one of many elements to consider. Lets consider some other elements in the bedroom that affect our sleep.
Sleep is an orderly event. We fall asleep naturally even if we are forced to fall asleep with strong medication. The process of falling from waking state of consciousness into the sleep state of consciousness is a natural process. It only happens in a natural way. So we're interested in setting up the initial conditions that allow sleep to come in its natural and effortless way. Considering our sleep environment there are a few things we can do to help maximize the possibility of falling asleep easily and effortlessly.
In our orderly sleep environment one of the natural things that happens during sleep is our 5 senses shut down. It's a time of inward direction. So whatever we can do to minimize sensory input should help: for example, sleeping in a dark bedroom. If light coming through the windows bothers you try thick curtains or drapes to block out the light. Or maybe you have a light on the stereo or a computer or printer that shines all night. If these machines can't be shut off a small piece of black electrician's tape can be put over the light. Another option is to wear an eye mask.
Some people require a little white noise like a fan or some background new age music playing softly. Others recommend earplugs but sleeping with earplugs may not be healthy if done on a regular basis. If you live in the city and traffic noise is a problem then thick curtains and blinds will help block out the noise.
Fresh air is always a very good idea for sound sleep. Our body is refreshing itself during sleep and it needs a supply of fresh oxygen to refuel the body. So cracking a window even in winter is an excellent idea.
Using your bed and bedroom only for sleep is also a good idea. There are
very sensitive people who can sense the energy around them. If you work on your bed or in your bedroom that can change the energy. Trying to sleep in a place filled with active energy can be difficult. That subtle active energy can have the effect of keeping your body and mind active while you lie there settling down waiting for sleep to come.
Aromatherapy can also be helpful. Your local health food store or in some cases local spas, can recommend essential oils or other mixtures that promote sleep. Lavender oil is known for its relaxing effects. All the senses can be used to relax the body and the sense of smell is known to have a very direct connection to the brain.
Of course sleeping on the right pillow and mattress can make a big difference. Please read our other helpful articles about the right memoryfoam pillow and memory foam mattress for you. In the meantime, try some of these helpful hints for a good night's sleep.
