Foam may flatten for a variety of reasons, but memory foam is going to soften more quickly than standard polyurethane foams and latex. Why? Because modern visco elastic memory foams are open-celled in structure, meaning that the air trapped inside the porous structure isn't sealed inside little a balloon or like bubbles. Instead, the cell walls are open, making the foam more breathable than a comparable closed-cell foam. A very high density memory foam will perform a little bit more like a closed cell foam. Some examples of this type of closed cell foam are latex foam that has been processed using the Dunlop foam process; because in this relatively more natural Dunlop manufacturing process, fewer chemicals are used to break down the natural latex foam. Another example of a non flattening foam is a dense polyurethane base foam.
