The Dunlop Latex Process — Producing 100% Natural Latex
"Dunlop" is a process rather than a product – developed in the late 1800s for producing latex rubber from liquid latex. The process involves preparing a latex batter with specific processing agents and then vulcanizing (curing) it in a mold with heat. Within the bedding industry, Dunlop latex mattresses are normally made of 100% Natural Latex and are often a little more dense and firm than Talalay.
The other process used for producing latex rubber is the Talalay Process – developed initially in the early part of the 20th century. Talalay is also a process rather than a product, and involves preparing a latex batter with specific processing agents, some of which are petrochemical-based, injecting carbon dioxide as a gelling agent, quick-freezing the batter inside the mold, and then vulcanizing (curing) it with heat. Talalay latex is more open celled and porous, and is normally used to cure batters containing part synthetic rubber and part natural rubber. Because talalay latex is more porous it is also less firm (softer) than Dunlop latex.
The debate over 100% Natural Latex versus a blend of synthetic and natural latex is as longstanding as the debate over the superiority of one method of producing latex over the other. If you are looking for 100% natural latex, however, Dunlop is going to be your best choice since it does not involve the use of added petrochemicals and does not weaken the cell walls by artificial inflation or freezing. Unfortunately, many manufacturers now advertise “100% Natural Talalay” or some other verbiage that utilizes “Natural” in a misleading way in order to lead potential customers to draw the conclusion that their product is, indeed, totally natural.
Promoters of blended latex talalay tell us that the addition of a small amount of butadiene-styrene rubber produces a product that is loftier, can be more carefully engineered for density and feel, and is easier to manufacture and handle. Also the talalay highly processed foam allows for more uniformity or consistency of the latex foam. As with all truly natural products, Dunlop latex may occasionally have some slight imperfections here and there. The more natural Dunlop process is expensive and therefore the Dunlop latex products will tend to cost slightly more than their Talalay counterparts. This is the reason so many manufacturers and sales outlets do not offer Dunlop Latex options.
