Ancient History

We don’t have any written record of how long people have been using the gum from rubber trees.  However, we do know that when explorers came to the Americas that local inhabitants were already using this material.   Christopher Columbus noted that people on the island of Haiti were playing with a bouncing ball made of rubber tree gum.  The Ancient Mayans also used this material to create hoops and balls for a separate game.

Early Latex

Numerous early inventions spiked an interest and trade in a pre-rubber/latex material.  In 1770, the eraser was created from the material, giving rubber its name, since it “rubbed off” pencil marks.  In 1824, the first raincoat was produced, followed not long after by the first pair of waterproof rubber boots.

There are numerous trees in Central and South America that produce a gum similar to the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, but none are as prolific of producers.   There were numerous attempts in South America to produce plantations of Hevea Brasiliensis trees to feed the growing desire for the product.  However, a specific fungus in Brazil made these efforts fruitless.   In 1876, seeds from this specific rubber tree were sent to London where they were germinated and grown for a short period of time.  The climate in London is not nearly tropical enough to support large growths of these trees.   So, seedlings were sent out to more tropical areas of the then large British empire.   Plantations were started in Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Recent Developments

In Sri Lanka and Singapore techniques were developed for ‘tapping’ the trees, before these techniques were found the trees had been cut down to harvest the gum.    With these improved methods more rubber tree plantations developed in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

Improvements in production processes have continued up to the current day, providing us with the latex that we use today.  There are two main processes used in latex production, the Talalay method and the Dunlop method, for more information on these processes please see this discussion of Dunlop and Talalay Natural Latex.

As you can see, natural latex has been around for a long time.  Synthetic latex is a more recent invention.   A shortage of natural rubber and latex in Germany during WWI led to the development of synthetic latex.   Synthetic Latex has been improved upon since that time of need, but is still slightly different from natural latex.   Many latex produced now is a mixture of natural and synthetic either for price or performance reasons.   The natural latex pillows, mattresses and mattress toppers sold at Absolute Comfort are all made of entirely natural latex.

Proper Alignment

Throughout the day remember to align your head with your spinal cord.
Many of us, myself included, lean our heads forward when we are giving our

a problem for short periods of time, but many of us spend our days in this
posture. As we lean the head forward the amount of weight placed on the
neck to support the head increases dramatically. You can test your
posture by standing against a wall so that your back is against the wall
and your head should rest against the wall to be in the correct position.

Sitting for Long Periods?  You Need a Head Rest

If you work in an office environment where you spend long periods of time
sitting, your chair can be either the culprit and cause of your pain…or

become used to keeping your head correctly aligned with the spine. Head
rests give your neck a chance to relax. Also, by providing a comfortable
space for your head to stay, it reduces the bodies desire to lean the head
forward.

The Connection Between Your Neck and Shoulders

Even with the best intentions of keeping a correct posture, we often
develop tension in our necks over the course of the day. Try to
remember, especially when you are more stressed, to take a moment and let
your shoulders fall downwards and back. Often when we get stressed our
body assumes a posture that pulls the shoulders upwards. Take a deep
breath and relax, don’t require your neck muscles to hold your shoulders up.

body in being able to let go of the tension of holding up your arms and
shoulders all day long. After a while of having correctly adjusted arm
rests your body will get used to being able to use that support and

Another technique for relaxation is to take deep breaths and slowly rotate
your neck and head in a circle. Then allow your head to slowly fall from
one side to the other and hold in each position for a few seconds, letting
the muscles relax and lengthen.

We recently tried out the Ortho Gel seat pads in our kayaks and found them to be extremely comfortable. I had almost no support for my neck, so I started looking for an alternative. Not as easy as you might think. I found that many poly fill pillows have flame retardants that are neurotoxins. Yuck. Down sheds and goes flat over time just like wool… Then I found ErgoSoft Latex, they are naturally hypo-allergenic, mite resistant, and anti-microbial to resist common germs, bacteria and mildew. And they won’t go flat. Perfect!

Back to the Future….

I have had my contoured latex pillow for two weeks now and no kinks. It is filled with holes so it does not get hot and it breathes. No dust and you can wash it if you really need to. The other great thing about Latex is that it doesn’t have a chemical smell. I am very sensitive and it doesn’t bother me at all. Now I’m going  for an ErgoSoft Latex Topper for my Mattress.

Latex Topper

Ever since my dream pillow arrived, the latex one, I’ve been wanting a topper of the same stuff very badly. Really. Totally. And I finally got it! Oh I am sleeping like a baby now. Such a wonderful feeling. Soft and yet springy. Not too hot to sleep on like synthetics. It is due to this spongelike foam and those holes poked through. Kind of reminds me of a waffle the way this looks. My latex topper really rocks!

The Good Stuff

ErgoSoft Latex is made from 100% Natural Latex Rubber. No synthetic rubbers or petroleum products added. No toxic solvents added. Its kind of scary what some other companies advertise under the banner of “natural” or “organic”. Have I seen the gimmicks and tricky words. Business-itis. They must think if they throw a little of the real stuff in with their brew, they can call it a natural product.

Cooking it Up

How latex rubber is made. OMG! The 100% natural stuff is made where rubber trees grow. That means Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia. They use a Dunlop Method to cure the whipped latex sap. They cook it. The batter turns into a pillow, or a loaf of latex that is sliced into toppers or used in mattresses. Closed cell walls make springy, long lasting foam. Pure and Simple.

The people who make latex in the USA or Europe add things to the sap. They stabilize it and add all sorts of synthetics to improve qualities of latex. How else would the sap be shippable thousands of miles? Synthetic rubbers are added and maybe petrochemicals. If they cook it by the Talalay recipe, that takes extra chemicals and solvents. The cell walls are broken and the foam becomes more breathable. The same or even better  they say? I think it is a matter of opinion.
