Yoga Can Help You Sleep

Those who practice yoga can attest to its many beneficial effects from relaxing the mind and body, removing aches and pains to restoring the spirit. Now it has been shown that practicing yoga can help you sleep. Recently the NSF, National Sleep Foundation, published a study from the Indian Journal of Medical Research which compared the effects of Yoga on 69 elderly residents living in a residential home in India.

yoga sleepThe National Sleep Foundation article states: "If you are an older person experiencing trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, you may want to try yoga. A study published in Indian Journal of Medical Research compared the effects of yoga and ayurveda (a form of alternative medicine) on 69 subjects over 60 years old, living in a residential home in India. The participants were randomly put into three groups -- yoga, ayurveda and control. The yoga group learned physical postures, relaxation techniques, voluntarily regulated breathing and went to lectures on yoga philosophy. The ayurveda group received an herbal treatment of herbs.

The NSF article goes on to state: "The participants completed a short questionnaire after three and six months of interventions. Although the ayurveda and control group experienced no change in sleep after three or six months of intervention, the yoga group reported decreased time taken to fall asleep and a significant increase in the total hours slept each night.!"

The effects of yoga on sleep are to not only decrease the amount of time taken to fall asleep but also to increase the length of time the person sleeps each night.
