Why Sleep on a Mattress?
For centuries humans slept on the ground or directly on the floor boards. In many Asian countries today people still sleep directly on the floor with a simple thin grass mat under them. So what brought on the invention of the mattress and then the bed? The quest for comfort, of course. Imagine having to sleep on the bare floor after sleeping on a comfortable bed all your life. First you have trouble falling asleep, then the back pain, then the sleepless nights, then flat out insomnia. Pretty easy to imagine the discomfort isn't it? Apparently others in our large world family thought the same way because the concept of sleeping off the ground on a bed or mattress was put into practice as early as 8,000 BC. But a really comfortable mattress didn't come along until nasa developed the foam used in the Tempurpedic mattress or other memory foam beds.
The first mattresses were more likely just pads made of grass or piles of straw. But we humans must have decided to contain all that padding with some kind of cloth that eventually led to mattress ticking. Continuing our quest for comfort we stuffed those sacks with pea shucks, feathers, wool, cotton, straw, or rags. But history tells us mattresses were lumpy even up to the late 1800s when the box spring was invented. Even the box spring mattresses were lumpy but at least the springs made it more comfortable.
When it comes to sleep, comfort is key.
Who ever heard of having a comfortable sleepless night or comfortable insomnia? NASA was concerned that their astronauts be comfortable so they would be alert and clear minded to perform all the many complicated and delicate functions astronauts are required to perform. For that reason, again pursuing our quest for comfort, even if for the advancement of science, nasa inspired the creation of the Tempurpedic mattress, and other memory foam beds. Nasa scientists needed something that was not only comfortable, but that would conform to the varied shape of the human body and allow the astronauts to wake up free of back pain or shoulder pain due to a lumpy or unforgiving mattress. And all that wasted space in the box springs should be used for something important…like comfort.
Just like the Tempurpedic mattress, our mattress is made of comfortable memory foam that conforms to your particular body shape and supports your body where it needs to be supported most without contorting your hips or shoulders or spine or neck. You could even sleep on the floor boards on a memory foam mattress and be very comfortable. Although your dog or cat or who knows what critters may decide to join you if you sleep on the floor. That's one reason why beds were invented. Once we humans discovered that if we elevated our mattresses all the fleas and ticks and creepy crawlers that lived inside those feather or grass mattresses couldn't find us as easily up off the floor. Hence beds became very popular.
Today people have been known to spend as much as $16,000 on a mattress and box spring set. For that price you better have some serious comfort. But why pay so much money when you're still getting a conventional mattress and box springs that don't really conform to your body shape? Instead, your body tries to conform to the shape of the mattress. Some research has shown that conventional mattresses can be the cause of back problems, sleepless nights and even insomnia. Thank God for the space program and Nasa's quest for comfort. We now have memory foam beds that really are comfortable. Sleep well and let your memory foam mattress do all the work.
