The Bed in History
Beds have evolved over time from primitive furs to memory foam wonders. The latest in bed technology is the visco elastic memory foam beds. These beds conform to our unique shapes and sizes responding to temperature and weight. Follow with us as we track the bed over time:
10,000 years ago, in the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive "beds" perhaps made of soft branches and furs.- 3400 BC. Egyptian pharaohs were the first to discover the benefits of raising a sleeping platform off the floor. King Tutankahmen had one such bed made of ebony and gold. The commoner however slept on palm bows heaped in the corner of their home.
- Roman Empire. The first luxury beds came about often decorated with gold, silver or bronze, these beds featured mattresses stuffed with reeds, hay, wool and feathers.
- Renaissance. During this period mattresses were made of feathers, straw or pea shucks stuffed into coarse ticks. They were then covered with elaborate silks, brocades and velvets.
- 16th and 17th centuries. Mattresses during this period were placed on rope lattice work.
- The late 18th century. The advent of the cast iron bed and cotton mattresses brought a new level of hygiene to beds. This combination was less attractive to assorted vermin who up until this period were accepted as a component of even the most royal beds.
- 1865. The first coil spring construction for mattress was patented.
- 1930's. Innerspring mattresses and upholstered foundations became the rage in US and Canada.
- 1940's. The first futons were introduced in the US. They had already been around for hundreds on years in the Orient.
- 1950's. Regular foam rubber mattress and pillows first appeared on the market.
- 1960's. The modern waterbed was introduced as well as the first adjustable bed platforms. Both became quite popular with consumers
- 1980's. On the heels of waterbeds, which many found a bit cumbersome, the airbed was introduced.
- 1990's. NASA develops visco-elastic memory foam to help astronauts deal the gravitational pull. That new technology has since exploded on the marketplace. Memory Foam is now used not only in mattress, but in mattress toppers, a wide variety of pillows, exercise mats, folding beds and a host of other comfort products.
