History of Temprpedic Mattresses

compare to temprpedic foamThe material found in temprpedic mattresses was developed in the early 1970's by NASA's Ames Research Center.

This foam was the result of a project designed to create a substance that could help relieve astronauts of the incredible g-forces experienced during lift-off. NASA researchers believed that one of the keys to reducing g-forces on the body was to use a foam material that could conform to each person's shape and hold this conformity. One option was a foam mold of each astronaut's body. The down side to this was that any movement would cause the astronaut to be out of position and create uncomfortable pressure points against the body. Instead, they created a new temrpedic foam material that was visco-elastic and therefore able to conform to the astronaut's shape and recover to a normal shape once pressure was released. This allowed an even distribution of body weight over the surface of the foam, and allowed the foam to quickly adapt to any movements of the body.

In the early 1990s a Swedish mattress company, Temprpedic,  introduced this foam in a mattress form and found great success. Other bed manufacturers took note of the popularity of this new style of bed and began to offer their own versions of the bed at a reduced price.

What is Special about Temprpedic Mattresses

The advantage of a temrpedic mattress comes from the memory foam construction. The foam starts as a synthetic polyurethane foam material which has certain types of chemicals added to it. This increases the weight and density to the foam. The addition of these chemicals creates a non-toxic, visco-elastic foam.

Temprpedic mattresses are not all the same however. They are graded by their weight per square foot. This can range from 2lb to 5lb. Many people feel that a weight of 4lbs is best. It offers the best combination of support and reaction time. The reaction time of the 4lb foam is what makes it so desirable. When the sleeper changes positions during the night the foam reacts to this change fast enough to keep the sleeper from falling back into their original position.

Temprpedic mattresses also are not relient on a box spring to be comfortable. The mattress can be used on a concrete floor and be comfortable. However, it is recommended that a platform base be purchased with temprpedic mattresses to raise the height of the bed, or it can be used on an existing box spring.
