Pain and Sleep
During a recent Sleep in America poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, 20% of American adults (42 million people) reported that pain or physical discomfort disrupts their sleep a few nights a week or more. The possible consequences of this may include lack of energy, difficulty maintaining alertness, impaired mood and trouble handling stress, poor health and accidents.
Many people with pain and sleep problems indicate that they are awakened at night by pain or they wake up too early due to pain.
Often, these people wake up feeling unrefreshed. Pain can cause sleep to be lighter, less deep with more disruptions. Sleep and pain sufferers will find it difficult to function at their best.
Back pain is the most prevalent type of medical disorder in industrialized societies, affecting at least 80% of adults at some time in their lives. Most people recover from back pain in less than two weeks, however some report that back pain can return and worsen over time. The more severe the pain, the more likely it will interfere with sleep. Two thirds of patients with chronic back pain suffer sleep trouble. Some pain medication, such as analgesics, may alter sleep patterns and make sleep more difficult.
The latest trend in sleep technologies is the visco-elastic memory foam.
