The NASA Mattress Developed by Tempur-Pedic ®
The NASA mattress, better known as the Tempur Pedic ® (See our page, What is Tempur Pedic?) mattress has been around for more than 30 years. Memory foam was born when NASA engineers were looking for something to relieve g-force pressure on the astronauts during lift-off. Tempu Pedic recognized the potential of this space age technology and put it to use in the medical industry to relieve pressure sores. Memory foam's unique ability to respond to body heat, weight and to spread pressure over a great surface area reduces pressure points significantly.
The company Tempur Pedic® realized the potential of this NASA mattress for the consumer market.
Initially they developed a more durable memory foam for the medical market, but when patients reported sleeping better and waking up with less aches and pains, Tempur Pedic ® launched memory foam bedding for the mass market. This included memory foam NASA mattresses and memory foam NASA pillows. Memory foam was very expensive and still is due to the fact that the Tempur Pedic Company originally developed this product for the medical field. In addition they spend an enormous amount on advertising.
Tempur-Pedic now sells three memory foam mattresses:
the Classic, the Deluxe and the Celebrity. When you go to their site, tempur-pedic.com, it is not easy to find the specifications for each memory foam mattress. Questions such as how much memory foam is in each mattress and what is the density of the memory foam are left unanswered. Information on their nasa mattress is available by mail but it takes time to receive it.

A high quality foam with a price tag to match. A memory foam critic states that this higher density gives a lot of support, but can also feel like sleeping on soft clay and is not responsive when you move positions. This is because memory foam produced by Tempur-Pedic ® does not recover quickly. This is to say that when you change positions the foam does not rebound fast enough and you will fall back to your former position. This can make for a very restless night. Other manufacturers of memory foam have found that the 4lb NASA foam is much more comfortable.
Seeing the success that the Tempur-Pedic ® Company had in the memory foam mattress market other foam manufacturers began to produce their own versions of the NASA mattress.
