Motherwort: Sedative for the Heart
Scientific research has shown motherwort to be effective as a cardiac tonic and a hypotensive substance. Motherwort is known to have a very similar sedative effect on the system as Valerian but some scientific research has even shown Motherwort to be between 1.5 and 3 times more sedative then Valerian. Motherwort has been shown to improve metabolism in the heart, reduce heart rate, increase coronary perfusion and inhibit blood platelet aggregation. It's latin name Leonurus Cardiaca shows that it has been known for sometime to have an effect on the heart or cardiaca. Though it has been used as sedative tonic its main effect is hypotensive in the cardiovascular system. The herb can lower the blood pressure and contract the blood vessels.
Daniel Mowrey in his book Herbal Tonic Therapies states that: "In 1948 an Italian study reported similar kinds of opposing forces at work in motherwort, depending on how it was prepared and administered. The whole plant was used to prepare either ethanol or aqueous extracts. These extracts exhibited mild sedative effects, which were attributed to both organic and inorganic components, practically insoluble in ethanol. The ethanol extracts had a fleeting depressor effect and a still less marked stimulating effect on respiration. Large doses depressed the heart muscle, perhaps mainly because of the potassium content. This he references from Erspammer, V.
