Lemon Balm in Latin is known as Melissa Officinalis.
It is often simply referred to as balm and as the name implies it is a soothing and calming balm for stressed and tired nerves. It is sometimes referred to as "cure all" and indeed has been used to cure a wide variety of illnesses and health conditions.
It is a sedative to relax the nerves and induce sleep. And as a member of the mint family it is highly aromatic and also invigorating. It lifts the spirit, relieves depression and strengthens the brain and memory. In the 9th century Arab physicians prescribed it for hypochondria. It's calming properties help to relieve all kinds of pain such as menstrual cramps, premenstrual tension, headache, insomnia, toothache and sore muscles. Lemon balm has a reputation of improving the brain functioning by relieving headaches, migraine, vertigo, buzzing in the ears and improving memory and concentration.
The oil of lemon balm is antibacterial and a powerful germicide.
Due to its ability to destroy bacteria it was useful as a surgical dressing. The oil can be used for ear infections and in mouthwash for gum infections and toothache. Beekeepers use the oil to attract bees into the hives. The essential oil also has a calming effect and can be used to calm nervousness, anxiety, tension and relieve insomnia. A little oil in some warm water helps with indigestion as well as colds and coughs. It is an antihistamine and some oil in warm water is helpful for allergies.
The dried leaves are frequently used in sleep pillows to relieve insomnia. It is a common constituent of relaxants, nerviness and sleeping aids of all kinds.
