Hops: The Herb of Deep and Restful Sleep
Hops are a climbing vine which can grow to 20 feet. The word hops comes from the Anglo Saxon hoppan which means 'to climb'. It is member of the hemp family and was once thought of as being dangerous because it was noticed that harvesters fell asleep while gathering them. Hops are most frequently associated with beer. In the 12th century it was introduced into European breweries the female hop cones impart a bitter taste to the beer or ale and also prevent bacterial growth.
Hops has been used down through the centuries as a sleeping aid and as a sedative.
In England in 1787 a pillow filled with hops was used to cure King George III's insomnia. The dried flowers of hops are used to this day in sleeping pillows. The main use of hops is to calm and tone nerves and help induce sleep. For this purpose it is usually combined with another herbal sedative such as valerian root and passion flower. These combination of herbs are used in dozens of proprietary sleeping aids throughout Europe and the United States.
Hops has an anti-spasmodic action which reduces tension in muscles throughout the body including spasm in the stomach muscles. It helps in digestive problems such as nervous indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome. The bitters found in hops aids in digestion and improves the liver functioning and bile action. The asparagin in hops is a soothing diuretic which reduces fluid retention and hastens the elimination of toxins.
Latin name for hops is humulus lupulus. Lupulus creates advanced stages of sleepiness due to the narcotic effect of large quantities of hops. With its diuretic, tonic, stomachic and sedative properties it has been used extensively in herb remedies and preparations.
