It was historically known to be the herb of protection and even provided immunity from the attack of an enemy if worn. It should be avoided during pregnancy because it stimulates contractions and for this reason it is associated with child birth.
In homeopathy vervain is made into a tincture and used for nervous disorders such as depression, stress, anxiety, tension, insomnia, muscle tension and mental exhaustion. It calms over-excitability and brightens those who are run down due exhaustion.
It is no wonder vervain was considered "the holy herb" and was crossed and blessed when it was gathered.
